Ron and Anita visit Steve and Patty

Hello,

2010-07-12 - SD, Mount Rushmore National Memorial 1051 We haven’t had the opportunity to dance much this summer (only three times with our home club), but we are enjoying a trip through the northwest.

We joined friends from Texas, Donna and Glenn Hallford, in Wall, SD for a 2 month journey.  We had been to most of the places we’ve stopped before, but they had not so it has been fun to see it again through their eyes.

We’ve visited the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Waterton National Park (Canada),  Glacier National Park, and are now in north Idaho.

2010-07-31 MT, Hungry Horse - Canyon RV Resort with Steve and Patty Porter 1011 While visiting Glacier National Park, we stayed at the Canyon RV Resort in Hungry Horse for a week.  Steve and Patty Porter are camp hosts there, and we really enjoyed the chance to visit with them (and to enjoy a dinner of Steve’s spaghetti)

2010-07-31 MT, Hungry Horse - Canyon RV Resort with Steve and Patty Porter 1005Canyon RV is a beautiful campground (due partially to Steve and Patty’s hard work).  If you’re traveling in the area of Hungry Horse (near Kalispell), we highly recommend the park.

We spent a week there with them last year also, and Steve even treated us to a couple of impromptu dances.  If you’d like to see the post from then, CLICK HERE.

The Hendricksens hope to see you at Lolo

grandsquareHello to square dance friends whom we met in Yuma.  We are now at home in Western Montana away from the Yuma heat.  We enjoy enjoy work and play here in Lolo and playing on Flathead Lake which is only a 2 hour drive from home.

If anyone is looking for square and round dance fun this summer, Lolo Square Dance Center …just 11 miles south of Missoula, Montana…  is the place to be.  Barry and Bobby Bartlett have a great campground for you RV’ers and a full schedule of guest square and round dance callers from all over the Western United States. You can pick up their  schedule at their website:  http://lolocampndance.com/.  I know we had a lot of flyers at local clubs this past winter, but now that everyone has gone home or locals looking for a nice place to escape from the heat, Montana is the place to be.

Hope to see some of you this summer..or we will meet again across the square in Yuma next winter.

It’s a very pretty park, with lots of trees and flowers.  There’s even a trail from the park down to the Flathead River’s edge.IMG_6802IMG_6804 We had planned to arrive on the same day as friends, Bernice and Hoyt, but they encountered problems with their motorhome and were delayed 4 days.

Steve and Patty spent the day with us on Wednesday, showing us some of the local sights.

We drove to Big Mountain, a nearby ski resort, where we rode the chair lift to the top of the mountain.  IMG_6826

The views going up were great….

IMG_6836 IMG_6852 …and we enjoyed our time on the mountain…. IMG_6877 IMG_6886

…but coming back down was spectacular!

After lunch in a nearby cafe, we drove to the Hungry Horse Dam.  Almost 172 feet tall, it was the fourth highest dam in the world at the time of its construction in 1953.

While we were at the park, a lady named Joyce staying there expressed an interest in learning to square dance, so Steve put together a “mini introductory” dance on Thursday night in the park pavilion.  The couple parked next to us, Anne and Ron Roy, had danced years ago.  We didn’t have enough for a square, so after demonstrating a round dance to Joyce, Steve called to two couples.IMG_7132IMG_7138

Patty danced in a tip or two, also.IMG_7225 She also cued a round dance for Ron and I.  Steve found a partner, although she was a little stiff.  🙂IMG_7228MVI_7185-2

On Friday, Ron and I drove around nearby Flathead Lake looking for those delicious Flathead cherries.  It is at the end of the cherry season, but we finally found one last stand still open.  The drive was nice, although the lake boundaries are so populated now, it’s hard to find an open spot for pictures.IMG_7099

Bernice and Hoyt arrived on Saturday, and another square dance couple did as well.  We had another “mini dance”, this time with a full square.

IMG_7232 It was almost too dark for photos, but the fun shines through:

News from Montana

A good time was had by all during a visit from Arnold and Jeannette Tramp. DSCN2831

A visit to the outhouse (complete with shower) on a ranch that we help care for in Hungry Horse, Montana provided a fun time. DSCN2822

Steve had to demonstrate the proper use of an outhouse, being his usual crazy self.

Arnold and Jeannette stayed with us for four days, and we enjoyed playing Pegs and Jokers and listening to country music on the computer.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Yuma,

Steve and Patty Porter

Ron and Anita visit Leroy and Suzanne’s Farm

As we turned north through Montana, we realized our route would take us through Moore, where Leroy and Suzanne Spidel live.

We stopped for a visit, and had the opportunity to watch their crop harvest in progress.

A large farm in Indiana is several hundred acres.  A large farm in Montana is several thousand.  The fields seem to go on forever.  Leroy was in the last days of harvesting the winter wheat.  IMG_6304b

Like the fields, the equipment is huge.IMG_6295

Leroy’s son-in-law, Warren, was driving the combine the day we visited.

Ron climbed up in the cab and enjoyed making a circuit of the large field with Warren.IMG_6300

IMG_6298I was amazed to learn that Suzanne prepares dinner each night of harvest for the workers, and delivers it to the field!  Harvest can continue for more than 30 days straight, and she often serves 15-20 people.

After preparing the meal, the food is packed into coolers and transported to the field in the pick-up, along with tables, chairs and even tablecloths.

When harvest is in full-swing, often the workers switch off for dinner, so that the equipment can keep running.

IMG_6303There are fewer workers now, as the harvest nears an end.  We start dinner, as Warren empties the combine into the truck and prepares to join us.

 IMG_6302

Leroy and Suzanne apologized for having to continue work during our visit, but we thoroughly enjoyed the glimpse into their farming life.IMG_6314

IMG_6341If you happen to be in Montana, be sure to buy bread made from Montana grown wheat.  Who knows, that wheat may have come from Leroy and Suzanne’s fields!

President Marilyn and Bob Partiss are dancing the summer away

We received the following this week from Yuma Square and Round Dance President, Marilyn and Bob Partiss:

Hope your summer is going as great as ours is.  Here in Lolo, Montana all is really good.  The weather has been mild and the dancing has been wild.  Jerry Junck is here this week doing his "Mainstream Week" and everyone is having a great time and learning a bunch.  Last night was a dance with banana splits served at break time.  There are 2 or 3 sessions of dancing every day this week topped off with an introduction to plus on Saturday morning and a hot dog pot luck at noon.  The campground is full and even today, when the temperature is supposed to be 100, it will get down into the 50’s tonight.

(If you would like more information on Lolo and the summer dance program, CLICK HERE)

Marilyn would also like everyone to know that the location for the 2010 Diamond Jubilee Festival has been finalized.  We will have the Festival in the Civic Center, as usual.  Many of you know there was some doubt, with the outcome depending on the extending of the Yuma Hospitality tax bill.  The city did get the extension, so the Civic Center will remain open.

Update on Leroy’s Surgery

  Greetings from Montana,

Leroy had surgery Tuesday morning at 7:30 and was giving all the nurses a hard time;  he really did have some great nurses!   They had him up walking within 2 hrs. out of recovery.

He only had to have a partial on this one.  They started therapy right away and we were on the way home Wed. afternoon. We went into Lewistown for his first therapy Thursday and will do that 3 times a week, plus at home too; doesn’t leave much time to get anything else done.

He really is doing great and looking forward to having the 2nd one  done the 27th of July.

The new house is ready for the counter tops and the plumbing fixtures installed but that stuff won’t be hear until after the 4th of July.  Our family is helping plant the yard and that is going great, sod in a week or so.  Crops are looking good and life is great!

Our Love,  Leroy and Suzanne
