A Summer Update from the Odoms

When we left Yuma we vacationed at Lake Powell in Northern Arizona, where we enjoyed a boat trip and hike to Rainbow Bridge.

Before leaving the area we also went through Antelope Canyon with its amazing colors and light beams.

From there we visited our daughter on a thoroughbred horse ranch near Vacaville CA.

Our two sons live near Seattle, WA where the one in Des Moines, WA has room for us to park in his back yard. The weather hasn’t been the best but that seems to be the norm.

We have had good visits with friends and family and are ready to be in Yuma again.

Hoyt and Bernice enjoying a Ranch Stay

Hoyt and Bernice Odom have submitted some beautiful pictures from their stay at  their daughter’s home.

Hoyt and I have spent about 1 1/2 months visiting our daughter Cindy near Vacaville, CA.  She has a trailer house on a horse ranch and we have a full hook up while there. The ranch owner lets us stay without charge which is always nice.

We enjoy being in the country and seeing the new foals and other ranch inhabitants.  We took care of Cindy’s ponds and 6 cats while she was away for a couple of weeks.  She was working with a Vet on a Horse Clinic in Mexico.   Hoyt has been helping Cindy wire the bus she is fixing up as a working RV to use on Horse Clinics.

I have been doing more relaxing than working but have done some quilting and woodcarving.  We haven’t done any Square Dancing yet this summer.  Hope everyone is enjoying their summer as much as I am.

Yuma Main Street Friday Night Social Demo

Thanks to all who took part in the demo last Friday evening during the Yuma Main Street Friday Night Social.  How wonderful to see 5 full squares show up for a demonstration!

Adding extra fun to the evening was the entry of two of our couples in the “Mr. and Mrs. Look-a-like” contest.  Frank and Kay Mowery took Third place, and Hoyt and Bernice Odom came in First!

IMG_2421 A special THANK YOU goes to Steve Porter for calling for both our demonstrations this season, and to Arnold Tramp for cueing Friday Night.  Also thanks to Darlene Cookson for giving us some additional photos from the first demo, and for providing the photo below.

Steve not only helps us with calling demos, but is also known to dress at the height of fashion to call his Plus Dances.  Here you see him in his matching pink ensemble:

Thanks for being a good sport, too, Steve!

A week with Steve and Patty Porter

It’s a very pretty park, with lots of trees and flowers.  There’s even a trail from the park down to the Flathead River’s edge.IMG_6802IMG_6804 We had planned to arrive on the same day as friends, Bernice and Hoyt, but they encountered problems with their motorhome and were delayed 4 days.

Steve and Patty spent the day with us on Wednesday, showing us some of the local sights.

We drove to Big Mountain, a nearby ski resort, where we rode the chair lift to the top of the mountain.  IMG_6826

The views going up were great….

IMG_6836 IMG_6852 …and we enjoyed our time on the mountain…. IMG_6877 IMG_6886

…but coming back down was spectacular!

After lunch in a nearby cafe, we drove to the Hungry Horse Dam.  Almost 172 feet tall, it was the fourth highest dam in the world at the time of its construction in 1953.

While we were at the park, a lady named Joyce staying there expressed an interest in learning to square dance, so Steve put together a “mini introductory” dance on Thursday night in the park pavilion.  The couple parked next to us, Anne and Ron Roy, had danced years ago.  We didn’t have enough for a square, so after demonstrating a round dance to Joyce, Steve called to two couples.IMG_7132IMG_7138

Patty danced in a tip or two, also.IMG_7225 She also cued a round dance for Ron and I.  Steve found a partner, although she was a little stiff.  🙂IMG_7228MVI_7185-2

On Friday, Ron and I drove around nearby Flathead Lake looking for those delicious Flathead cherries.  It is at the end of the cherry season, but we finally found one last stand still open.  The drive was nice, although the lake boundaries are so populated now, it’s hard to find an open spot for pictures.IMG_7099

Bernice and Hoyt arrived on Saturday, and another square dance couple did as well.  We had another “mini dance”, this time with a full square.

IMG_7232 It was almost too dark for photos, but the fun shines through:

Traveling with Hoyt and Bernice Odom

Hi to our Square Dancing Friends,IMG_6092 [50%]
We decided to take a weeks vacation with friends Ron and Anita in Benson, AZ before heading North. We hiked in the Chiricahua Mountains, went to the Pima Air and Space Museum and also hiked in to Fort Bowie National Historic site. All were well worth the time and effort.

We even managed to go to a dance in Sierra Vista. (note: see previous posting on Sierra Vista)

We hope to attend more dances this summer. After parting with our friends we took a Kartchner Cavern tour and were impressed with the precautions taken to preserve them, but no tour pictures were allowed.

Hope all of you are off to as good a start to your time away from Yuma as we are.
